On this page we’ll feature a club member every month to share their Volvo Story. We find every Volvo owner has a “story” about their car, either how they came to buy one, adventures they’ve had while driving, or maybe a Volvo saved their life in a crash.

Doug is our webmaster and chair of communications. The first Volvo in his family dated to 1969 when his mother insisted his father buy her a 145 wagon, mainly because of Volvo’s safety legacy (and she didn’t like driving Dad’s 4×4 Chevy Suburban!). Doug learned to drive in this 145, and a succession of Volvo 145 and 245 models over the next decade. Immediately out of college, he got his own 242 base model with a manual shift and hand cranked windows. Doug and his wife Kathy have owned about nine Volvos over the years, with Kathy currently driving a 2005 S80 2.5T. Their daughter Amanda drives a well-used 1994 944 Turbo sedan with over 250,000 miles on it.
Doug sticks with Volvos because of the safety reputation. Fortunately, he has never had to test those safety features. “They are just really solid cars.”
